I first heard of Saiyuki between 2002-2003. I started watching the anime in 2004-2005, back when a DVD with 3-5 episodes cost $30 ($50+ in today's dollars) at the movie store in the mall. If streaming video existed, I couldn't access it as a kid growing up in rural Vermont. (I had dial-up internet until 2008, so torrenting wasn't an option, either.)

headcanons

I don't believe the "Komyou Sanzo is a magnificent bastard" theory that he died on purpose to get the plot started.

Kamisama was the rightful inheritor of the Muten Sutra
- Ukoku Sanzo never recieved a chakra but Kamisama did.

Hassan is or will become a Sanzo priest.
- He trained with Sharak Sanzo and he won't take off his hat - because he's hiding his chakra.

predictions

Hazel will be back in the series.
- He's the only arc villain who survived.
- Hakkai's comment to Ukoku during the fight at the end of Even a Worm, where he says, "You forgot something."

Son Goku will become a Sanzo priest if not a god.
- In Xīyóu Jì (Journey to the West), Monkey King attains Buddhahood by the end of the journey.
- Goku will inherit the Seiten scripture, not the Maten scripture that's usually held by a youkai Sanzo.
I don't know exactly what's going to happen, but… Tenpou died by being disembowled. Hakkai has a huge scar across his abdomen. I'm worried about Sanzo and Gojyo.
