STORYWORLDS

rainy city

Mariel Boatwright ***

exiled multiverse elven princess pencil sketch (2001) and pen sketch (2006) of Mariel by me Drawings by Meep Matsushima 2001, 2006

canon(s): The Lord of the Rings & The Silmarillion × original (rainy city)
etc: The Holly Trees - Lev Mirov
tag: #character: mariel
story: #'verse: original: rainy city

Mariel Boatwright (Q., Máriël) is my oldest OC, but that wasn't always her name. (She didn't have a last name before she married Tristan Boatwright in 2014.) She wasn't my first OC* but she is the oldest who is still around.

Mariel wasn't even my first Lord of the Rings Mary Sue. That was an entirely different character also named Mariel, created c. April 2001. Mariel-Mariel walked into my brain in December of that year and said, "No, no, you've got everything wrong but my name" and the rest is history.

I've known Mariel longer than some of you have been alive and longer than many of my "irl" friends.

The "real" (or "canonical") Mariel appears in my paracosm, the rainy city. Every other version of her is an alternate universe.

In universe, Mariel is Celebrimbor's daughter and Glorfindel's niece (on her mother's side). She spent most of the events of The Lord of the Rings under house arrest in Rivendell. ■

seasons change

Briar of Redwall

timeskip modern Mossflower
canon: Redwall
tag: #character: briar
story: #'verse: redwall: seasons change

Briar of Redwall is based on an idea that I've had since I was a kid: a modern timeskip Mossflower Country. Originally, Redwall Abbey was going to become an orphanage but I decided it was more likely that it would be a museum.

In classic Redwall fashion, Briar is on a quest to find the Sword of Martin… in a modern world. ■

rise up *new!

Paisley Webster

victor of the 69th Hunger Games
canon: The Hunger Games
tag: #character: paisley webster
story: #'verse: hunger games: rise up

One of my newest OCs, Paisley Webster is the victor of the 69th Hunger Games. She lives in District 8 with her mom and her maybe-girlfriend, Penelope Fuller. ■

Penelope Fuller

left behind to weave and to wait
canon: The Hunger Games
tag: #character: penelope fuller
story: #'verse: hunger games: rise up *new!

Left behind when her best friend/maybe girlfriend, Paisley Webster is Reaped, Penelope "Penny" Fuller stays behind to survive… and help start a revolution. ■

monster hospital

Mary Brigid Mohan
& Orion

severed child saving herself
     (& the world)
canon: His Dark Materials
tag: character: mary brigid mohan & orion *new!
story: #'verse: hdm: monster hospital

"The Crystal Needle" was a His Dark Materials fanfic that I started (but never finished) when I was ~13 years old. It was about a severed child survivor from Bolvangar on a quest to find a mythical needle that can stitch her and her dæmon back together.

Like Briar, I'm taking a concept I first dreamed up as a kid and finally writing it down fully. ■

fire type

Zipporah "Zip" Suzuki

gonna be the very best
canon: Pokémon (Gen 2)

About *TK

I've always loved making up original characters. Even before I ever heard of fanfiction, I was writing stories in my head about self-insert original characters in the books and movies I loved. My first ever OC was Bianca, who was Miguel and Tulio's friend in The Road to El Dorado.

Growing up as a teenager on '00s-era LiveJournal, there was a lot of hate for so-called "Mary Sues." I joined communities dedicated to "sporking" other fans' self inserts which, in retrospect, was pretty messed up? especially because those communities were run mostly by fans in their twenties and thirties making fun of teenagers' fanfiction. Cringe culture is dead and I wanted to joyously share my original characters with everyone. ■
